I Want To Be a Princess

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

The news of the week is the official engagement of William and Kate. Outside Hollywood, there is little that captures the imagination and rouses the excitement of so many young (and not so young) girls. The promise of tiaras, bejewelled ballgowns and coachmen and butlers seems to play to a primal sense of hope similar to that which we feel when we hear about lottery winners: one day it could happen to us.

This hope persists, even when it is so obviously against the odds (i once heard that there is less chance of winning the lottery than putting one foot in a bath and being struck by lightning). Statistical probability and logical reasoning have nothing to do with it. Somewhere, somehow and sometime, it will be us. (more…)

now is the time

Here’s a beauty tip for you. Let go of your past.

The more ‘past’ we carry around with us, the ‘older’ we get. Age is deeply connected with the past. It is the very measurement of how much past we have. The more past we carry within ourselves the older we look and feel. (more…)

Pay Attention

Saturday, October 2nd, 2010

Oh, the irony. After writing my blog this week, with this title, I then inadvertently wiped it while I was mucking about on my iphone!! So now I’ve rewritten it – sorry for the delay.

Last weekend’s paper (here in Melbourne) contained this quote:

“Power…[is] a conspiracy – even those organisations understood to be open and legit [sic] players relied on the essence of conspiracy, which is an imbalance between information inside and outside the group. The more you reduce that imbalance towards zero, the less powerful the conspiracy becomes, even if it has weapons and wealth at its disposal. When information is evenly shared, the conspiracy, by its very nature, ceases to exist.” (more…)

Just Do It

Tuesday, September 21st, 2010

Last night I attended a play at the National Theatre in which a friend of ours was performing. The cast was young, brimming with enthusiasm and filled with the desire to just act. Money was not part of their motivation (at least, not in the short term). They were onlythere because of their love of acting.

I loved it. Their enthusiasm was papable and infectious. We, the audience, became caught up in the energ. and sent it back to them with equal measures of mutual enthusiasm and appreciation. (more…)

Acknowledge Me

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

There is a new song on the radio about the desire to be rich and famous. The song is about becoming famous enough to be on the Oprah show, and the general craving for acknowledgment and recognition. The final line of the chorus is “I want to be a billionaire, real frickin’ bad”  suggesting that all our dreams turn on enormous amounts of money.

Robert Ohotto, a world famous astrologer and author, points to the increasing number of young people who genuinely believe that it’s in their stars to be a star. In fact, he argues, this desire does not arise from a genuine love of acting or singing, but rather a deep-seated desire to be ‘recognised’ on a grand scale. Drama:Who Needs It?

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

The road inland from Santa Cruz, where I’m staying, is a winding highway through a mountain range. I’m getting to know both the road, and the habits of the local drivers, well.

I’ve noticed, that unlike many Australian drivers, they don’t get angry at the slow drivers in the fast lane. They don’t flash their lights, blast their horns, or ride their tails.  They just quickly and quietly change lanes, go around them and then overtake. They don’t make a fuss, but nor do they let these obstacles hold them back or distract them.   (more…)

Just Ask!

As I sit here tucking into my maple pecan oat scone, propped up on a stool in Starbucks (I know Starbucks has its detractors but personally I’m a fan – they make everyone welcome, provide much needed public restrooms for all, and I love their mochas!!) it occurs to me it’s time to make a conscious effort to give gratitude.

Since  arriving in this beachside town here in California I have struck up conversations with quite a few men whom I presume to be homeless. The two young guys were unemployed – seeming victims of the economic woes of the country – while the older ones veterans of one war or another. Almost all of them missing a significant number of teeth. (more…)

Who Wants To Be Happy?

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010

I went down to San Diego for the Hay House conference a couple of weekends ago. Robert Holden, a successful writer/speaker in the Hay House stable, captivated his audience of more than a thousand. He has studied the nature of happiness and has written several books on the topic but he got everyone’s attention when he said that instead of chasing our happiness,  we should, rather, follow our joy.

Simple yet profound, and it really got me thinking. What is the difference between the two? (more…)

As in Yoga, So in Life

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

I am missing my Melbourne yoga teacher, Gena Kenny (from Ohana Yoga) like mad. Gena gave me a love of yoga that eluded me until about six months ago. Largely due to her pure and loving heart she is able to  facilitate a practice that feeds the mind and soul whilst working through the body. It has been a revelation for me.

So now I’m in California and I’ve been looking for a Gena and I found Roxanne. As I was stretching my briefly forgotten muscles (the last two weeks have been so crazy with my book launch and all, yoga fell by the wayside) Roxanne gently encouraged me to push further as my muscles relaxed and softened. California Dreamin’: How and Why

Thursday, May 6th, 2010

Sorry I’m late with this article – I flew to California on the weekend and it has taken me a while to find my feet.  As I settled into my room in the Victorian Guest House where I will be staying for most of the next three months, I had that familiar sinking feeling of homesickness, asking myself: why am I doing this?

I’ve spent a lot of time travelling over the last three years and it is peculiar but when I am in foreign realms I seem to be able to tap into the most amazing inspiration. I gain a clarity of thought that seems to switch to snooze just as I touch back down in Melbourne. (more…)
